Athenian Society

USC's Athenian Literary and Debating
Society closed the semester with a controversial
but lighthearted topic: "Women vs.
Men: Resolved, women are inherently inferior
to men".
? About 55 students attended the debate,
and iust over half were men
Much of the debating was far from
serious. Some of the men accused the women
of clearlv h^ino ihp inferior so*
At the end of the debate, the vote was
overwhelmingly against the resolution, as 39
people voiced opposition, five people abstained
arid nine ? all of them men, voted in
favor of the proposal, amid the jeers of th?
crowd.
Jack Hamilton, who argued in favor of
the resolution, drew his support from an
^ 1872 U.S. Supreme Court decision which
said that men need to "protect and defend"
the "delicate" women.
"The Supreme Court is the highest court
in the land. This is thp law " h*? snirl
Hamilton also said this country has never
had a woman president or vice-president,
and that the Supreme Court recently selected
its first woman justice. Women "appear to
be incapable of paying for their meals. They
insist on wearing high heels" and can't run
after muggers. Then they hire male lawyers
to defend them, said Hamilton, a law
student.
But some disagreed with Hamilton.
