Commission can't study

Bet you don't know what the Lightsey Commission
is doing.
But if this commission rccornmcnds your department
be eliminated, you'll complain. If it says your
department should get more money, you'll give
thanks.
Either way, you'll wonder how such decisions were
made without your input and without your
knowledge. j
The l.ightscy Commission was named by USC
President James Holderman last fall to study the
kind of education USC offers. Since then, commissioners
have visited departments on all system campuses,
talking to professors and students about
USC's undergraduate programs.
The group, formally the Presidential Commission
on Undergraduate Missions, is looking for answers
to about 70 questions, including what USC's mission
is or should be, how to attract more freshmen, what
the affect of foreign language requirements will be

faculty to teach core curriculum.
At a panel discussion Friday, commission chairman
Harry Lightsey, dean of the law school, assured
professors that "hundreds" of students had been
consulted during the group's visits.
But "hundreds" aren't enough, considering that
the Columbia campus alone has 23,000 students.
And soon the commission starts constructing its
recommendations for departments and systems campuses
? the results arc due on Holdcrman's desk
Oct. 15.
Last fall Lightsey said the commissioners wanted
to hear from students.
Let them hear.
Now, becausc next month is too late. If you see
problems or potentials in your department, if you
think you take too much English and not enough accounting,
tell them.

Block association thanks
tJSC students for support
To llie editor:
On behalf of the DSC Block C Association, I would like
to thank all the si udents who attended the 19H5 spring tootball
game. Over 14.(KM) fans were on hand to witness a line
performance by our Gamecocks. It has been brought to my
attention, however, that many students were upset about
the $2 admission charge, assuming that the athletic department
was collecting the profits.
All proceeds from ticket sales, concessions and programs
went to help fund a new project of the Block C Association.
Letterinen and their spouses, including my wife Rose,
manned the concessions stands and sold tickets and programs.
All profits from the game are being used to help
with the expenses of a"Bloc kC'ring for every senior letter
man - oom maie anu lemaic - in eacn spoil. i nis year we
have over 70 graduating seniors. As you can see, this is
quite an expensive undertaking.
This year's spring game was the most successful ever and
very nearly accounted for the total cost of this new project.
With your continued support, you can help make this
possible annually - thank you.

Graduation :
With May 18 rapidly approaching,
I'm one of several thousand soon-tobe-graduates
wondering if Mom and

down here for the big day.
Alter all, the university hasn't even
announced who the speaker for the
commencement exercises will be.
I've heard all kinds of rumors,
everyone from Henry Kissinger to
Margaret Thatcher, but until I'm

There's also been talk on campus
about people who were asked to
deliver the commencement address,
but couldn't. I've heard that a Russian
leader was all set to visit USC, but he
came down with a bad cold.
Bernhard Goetz was then approached
about coming to Columbia for
graduation, but no one has heard from
the person who invited him since flying
to New York.
And the list goes on. Richard
