' Reader cite To the editor: i wuuiu iiK*; iu duurcw my toniments to Rob O'Connor. I guess the days of responsible journalism are gone. Upon reading your article on the "fashionable and tiresome" African famine relief songs, the lack of research you displayed was obvious to me. I agree that with the amount of radio play these songs receive, they do becomc tiresome. Yet, doesn't the purpose of the songs completely overshadow that? These songs will save lives, that's what matters. I also found your attack on Bruce Springsteen completely unfounded. oruce (not to mention Hob Dylan, Ray Charles, and Harry Belefonte) has Dnnrlnr ihml/o m ncauci Li hi iivo To the editor: Despite an article published previously Saga . wish to cast a few thoughts of n Saga is getting away with a lot of stud student who pre-rcgistcrs pays for the cntii "services" despite the fact that only 20 per are here the week before classes begin. Your most obvious error was in referring to him as egotistical and selfish. Bruce's charitable contributions this year are approaching $500,000 and still rising. In fact, while here in Columbia, he plugged for a state food bank and in Greensboro, N.C. he wrote a personal check in the amount of $10,000 to another local food bank. In every city he has tried to find at least one local charitv to suonort. About your comment on Bruce's bank account and choice of clothes, I refer to the December 6, 1984 issue of Rolling Stone. Inoo icavpd vviiioi ai iuoa To the editor: ,7 I am writing to comment on James Galloway's recent letter (February 22) in praise of the Golden Kule. l find it disturbing that Galloway, a self-proclaimed "ceremonyloving Episcopalian/' should d o co much in four brief paragraphs to exalt one precept from Scripture (q.v. Mat the* 7t i2) at the expense of the rest or ttte uospei ana t ne Church. Reading his letter, one would think that he enjoins his fellow Christians to be more tike his good, shiest ^Hat Oalloway*should praise his unchurched friend ai4' faithful adherent of Christ's teaching does not grieve me In the least. What worries me^is his distilling jhe Church's aatherines These he nrcsumablv takes to be churchy lux uries that supplement the sole necessity of the Christians spiritual diet: viz. obedience to the Golden Rule. As an episcopalian myself I have cause to take issue with him on this unhealthy muddling of the Christianas priorities. Galloway, so it seems, ha* forgotten that the Church is "what's left after the sanctuary and parish house have burnt to the ground." In failing to understand the Church to be the body of believers in Christ, he has confused the Christian center with its periphery.
