After a recent game in which USC's baseball team collected
24 hits and scored 29 runs, head coach June Raines said,
"This team hits more home runs than any team I have ever
coached."
Well, Raines can consider himself partly responsible for all
the home runs he has seen sail over the fence this year. Last
year, six Gamecock seniors accounted for 24 of the 53 home
runs hit in 1984 and two others, Ail-Americans Greg
Morhardt and Ken Anderson, who combined for 21 homers.

chose to turn pro. So Raines had to go out and look for
players to replace those long ball hitters.
And he was pretty successful, to say the least, as 10
newcomers have already accounted for 44 homers. He also
formed a team which has hit 61 home runs in only 24 games.
WHEN RAINES recruited for the 1985 season, he went
looking for players with college experience. As a result, eight
of the 13 newcomers are transfers from other schools.
Four of those have combined for 32 home runs, over half of
the team total. Jeff Barnes, Jeff Morris, Joe Datin, and Lewis

Barnes, a transfer from Baptist College of Charleston, has
been what Raines calls "the ideal leadoff hitter when he's
hot."
"Barney has power from both sides," Raines said. "He's a
switch hitter who can put you up real quick with a home run or

BARNES IS leading the club at the plate, hitting at a .390
clip. He has clubbed six home runs, and driven in 21 runs in
USC's first 24 games.
In a recent eight-game home stand, the sophomore shortstop
hit a blistering .531 with three home runs and 15 runs batted
in. "I've been feeling real confident at the plate," Barnes
said. "This was probably one of my best week's efforts. I had

was 0-7. But I camc back and worked on some fundamentals,
and things are starting to pick up."
Barnes said when he came to USC, he knew he could play
well, but he's still seen himself improve.
"When I came here last spring, I had a chance to meet the
guys and learn the system," he said. That's important when
you transfer somewhere."
BARNES SAID the baseball program at USC has improved
his game. "When I got here, they taught me a few things.
Coach Raines and coach (Rick) Sofield worked with me and 1
have seen myself improve both offensively and defensively."
He said he feels his role as a leadoff hitter is to get on base
and set the pace. He said hitting is a lot easier when you have
players like Jeff Morris and Joe Datin batting behind you.
Morris, a transfer from DeKalb Central Junior College, is
hitting .356 with nine home runs and 25 RBI. Morris' biggest
