football games is in the news again. And, as usual,
the system remains unfair to any non-greek
organization.
In a survey intended to be released Friday to student
organization presidents, SG block seating task
lorcc cnairman ivuuucy Drown prupuscs a new
system to an old problem.
In an attached letter, Brown and the task force say
the committee is "treating the issue in a fair,
equitable and deliberate manner."
Rill it's not
The survey asks the organizations if they are
satisfied with the eurrent system of rotation within
sections 501 and 502, located in the upper deck of
Williams-Brice Stadium, and if the groups prefer a
new system of rotation.
And the newly proposed system? "A fair and random
rotation of independent organizations within
Sections 502, 14 and 15.
While it would bring independents to the lower
decks, the new system would not include sections 17
and 18, which have been reserved solely for greek
organizations since the mid-1970s. In fact, these sections
are never even mentioned in the survey.
So, while independent organizations aren't given
the opportunity to voice their opinions about sections
17 and 18, the greeks happily remain in these areas,
protected by a survey as unfair as the present system
itself.
It's hard to say where the best seats among the
stadium's student section are located. If you go to a
game to actually watch football, the upper deck
allows a pretty good view of the action. But if you
like to party, go downstairs.
Many independents say it's the principle of the
system that's unfair. Perhaps, if they were asked.
most organizations would remain in the upper level.
But they haven't been asked.
The solution to this issue lies in the majority opinion
of the student body. While the survey is a good
idea, it doesn't go far enough because less than 10
percent of the student body is fairly represented.

The only problem is where to put the

And I would ha/ard to guess that the
USC fraternities would be even happier
if they were to move from a fraternity
quad to a fraternity row.
But let's be more realistic about this.
Will the USC administration ever

the library and the general lack of
parking in the area? No, probably
not.
I'm told the money just isn't there to
move the fraternities or build a new
parking deck, so you'll have to continue
to study with the stereos, and
dodge cars on sidewalks.
It's all part of the fun.
