thanks in part to a dropped baton.
Carolina's 400-meter relay team dropped its baton late in
the meet, as Charier, Coburn and Andy Mattison couldn't execute
the exchange. The miscue cost the Gamecocks 5 points in
the final tally.
USC had been leading the event when the baton was
dropped.
"THK 4x100 relay was a 10-point swing against us, and that
jv really hurt," USC track coach Charlie Strong said. "But,
[ every one of our guys who competed gave it his best shot.
"Miami has an excellent track tradition, and they have an
outstanding team."
Strong also commended USC sprinter Ollie Taylor, who
won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
"We are pleased with the wav Ollie ran." he said, "esnpeial
ly since this is the first time he has run an outdoor meet at
home. He had some injuries last spring and did not run."
TAYLOR, A SOPHOMORE, took the 100-meter event in
10.6 seconds, and then won the 200-meter dash in 21.8.
"For him 10 win the 100- and 200-meters is a big boost for
him," Strong said. "He ran a great indoor season, and he is
P picking up now where he left off from the indoor season.
"He has a lot of talent and a great attitude, and we just expect
him to get better and better."
