ing much better this spring for Pascual Perez.
Last spring the Atlanta Braves' right-hander
was languising in a Dominican Republic jail
awaiting results of a drug-related arrest. He
didn't arrive in the United States until several
weeks after the season started, and it took
sonic lime to caicn up.
But this year, at the Braves' strong request,
Perez stayed in Atlanta during the off-season
rather than return to the Dominican Republic.
He arrived at training camp on time and
ready.

Perez has given up one run and five hits,
all singles, while visibly enjoying himself.
"He's right on schedule," said Braves
manager Eddie Haas. "He's right about where
he should be."
"I feci better because my mind is free,"
Perez said. "I'm, not worried about anything
any more. I can just think about baseball.
"Last year was really tough for me. Now,
I'm real happy. 1 feel better about
everything."
SOMF. THINGS haven't changed about

"There isn't enough mustard to cover

coach John Sain says, "A guy has to go with
his own game."
But the Braves may have another way of
Reaching Perez. They have hinted that a
strong showing this season could bring about
a long-term-contract, which could be the right
thing to mitivate him.
