Summit fund cam|
By Jeri Howe
USC's largest fund-raising campaign officially ended its
three-year effort this December well within reach of its
$35-mi11inn coal.
The Summit Fund's last published accounts were $33.5
million in January, and did not include total earnings from the
15 separate state factions combined with the nine university
campuses involved in the elaborate drive.
Debra Allen, assitant news director of the USC News
Bureau, said the USC Development Office is tallying the final
results of what has been called the most ambitious fundraising
campaign in the university's 184-year history.
SUCH A CAMPAIGN was not undertaken before because,
as a state-supported university, USC relied on state appropriations,
which accounted for 50 percent of the university's
budget, instead of private funds, Allen said.
USC President James Holderman initiated the Summit
Fund in 1981, asking private businesses, corporations, university
alumni and educational foundations to help bring USC to

"To maintain a quality educational environment, it was
necessary to seek funding from private sources," Allen said.
The Summit Fund was aimed to help USC gain national and
international exposure and to beef up its endowment fund. In
1981, the endowment fund included about $7.9 million, according
to "A Four-Year Report from the President."
THIS YEAR, the Summit Fund has enabled 1,300 students
to receive more than $1 million in scholarship revenue from

private donations, compared to 300 students sharing $300,000
five years ago, the report said.
Other tangible results include more than $1.3 million in
computer equipment from firms including Data General,
Storage Technological Corp. and Seismograph Service Corp.
A $2.2 million donation came from an Atlanta businessman
who gave an undeveloped coastal barrier island near Hilton
Head for marine research and education.
Allen said other donations will not be earmarked for
"brick-and mortar" enhancement, but for improving university
laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, recruiting
gifted students and expanding library holdings.
ALSO, THE FUND will attract and keep outstanding faculty
along with encouraging faculty and graduate student
research and strengthen underfunded academic programs, she
said.
SG President Glenn German said the Summit Fund's success
will bring in "top-quality" students, which will "enhance
the value of our degree as the quality of USC increases."
