Olympic chief dies
PH1LADEPHIA ? Expressions of
shock and sorrow over the death of U.S.
Olympic Committee president John B.
Kelly Jr. poured in from civic, business
and snorts leaders.
The 57-year-old Kelly, an Olympic rowing
medalist from one of Philadephia's
most prominent families and brother of
the late Princess Grace of Monaco, died
Saturday after collapsing on a city street.
Kelly's son, John 111, said at a news
conference that his father would be buried
next Saturday to allow many expected
mourners time to reach Philadephia from
overseas.
Officials at the Philadelphia County
Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy

The story of Alex has a chance of becoming
a television movie. Deford said he
doesn't want the movie to become a "soap

of Alex gets lost. With backing, the movie
should become a reality.
Better known as a sports reporter, Deford
made some comments about his trade.

the death on an apparent heart attack.
Kelly, an Olympic bronze medal winner
and son of a three-time Olympic rowing
champion, was elected president of the
USOC last month ? a position he said in j
an interview he had "looked forward to A
for a long time."
"I'm shocked said Don Miller, former
executive director of the USOC, "It's a
loss to amateur sports in our country." $
"Jack has been identified with amateur
sports all his life and had looked forward
with great anticipation to serving as the
president of the U.S. Olympic Committee,"
Miller said. "It's a great tragedy
that this should happen before he could
fulfill his dream."
