Dawson Kelvin Stroblc was elected Student Government president in Monday's runoff against Bill Kotti, and Robin Nelson defeated William Sloan for - treasurer. Stroble received 1,072 votes to Kotti's 898. Kotti could not be reached for comment. Stroble said the first thing he will do in office is establish an open-door policy between university students and their Student Government and try to squelch any doubts about his abilities. "I WANT people to see the SG president in action. I plan to be visible and verv outsnnken nn <tuHcntt' mn. cerns. I will follow through on my ^ campaign commitments," the junior W" business major said. Stroble said stamping out student apathy is another of his goals. "If the government is responsive and outspoken, people will become involved, and that will help to alleviate the apathy we see now," he said. Stroble mentioned uncontested Student Senate seats, lack of student attendance at Senate meetings and poor voter turnout in last week's election as signs of apathy. "THERE ARE" so many things ' that students can do in SmHpnt Government. The senators have been doing everything. We need nonsenator involvement." he said. "We will make plans this summer, but it won't just be student leaders making the plans. We need average students to be active in the decision making process. "We are not necessarily going to at tempt big projects unless they meet student needs and attract interest. There is no sense in having a big project that doesn't interest students. STROBLE SAID an emphasis would be placed on small projects to improve student life because "it's the little things that cause the most problems." Stroble listed the pay phones in the Russell House that must be used for on-campus calls, little use of student discount movie tickets and high food prices in Saaa's Russell House dinino room as situations that, if changed, could improve daily life for USC students. Stroble mentioned the lack of parking spaces near campus as a bigger problem that may not have a quick solution. "1 won't pretend that there is any immediate solution. Possibly the gravel pit near the Pendleton Street garage could be paved to create maybe up to 200 or 300 spaces," he said. CHANGING THE one-hour limit uii pai King meters 10 nvc nours 10 accommodate longer Tuesday and Thursday classes may be another solution, Stroble said. Stroble said he wants to have an open-door policy to encourage student input into his administration. "I want every student to feel free at any time to contact me about any problems they may have. Call me at the SG office or at home," he said. Inaugural ceremonies for all new SG officers will be at 4 p.m. March 18 in the Rutledf?e Chapel on the Horsesline.
