Clemson president
in light of athletes
By Associated Press
The Clemson University board of trustees
has been almost evenly divided over president
Bill Atchley's job in recent months, but
Atchley may be losing ground, university
trustees and sources told The State
newspaper.
A majority of the 13-member trustee
board may be unhappy enough with Atchley's
leadership to vote him out of an office
he has held for almost six years, according
to sources who refused to be identified
in Sunday's article.
Some trustees already oppose the 53-yearold
president due to his efforts to reorganize
Clemson's athletic department, the
newspaper reported. But sources said a faction
that has resisted firing Atchley over
athletic issues is growing more unhappy with
his overall performance.
"THE ATHLETIC issue is the active interest
of some people on the board, who are
almost religious about it," one trustee told
The State.
"There are others of us who have supported
the president on athletic reform but
have become increasingly concerned about
the question of overall exectuive leadership."
Another trustee said the board "is about at
the stage to do something."
Atchley declined comment, but several
people close to the president told The State
that Atchley seems confident he can keep his
job ? with a core of support among three or
four of the board members.

BUT SEVERAL trustees said the board
has been almost evenly split over Atchley for
months, with the president holding no more
than a one- or two-vote margin. They now
say the margin is quickly shifting to the other
side.
Atchley supporters, on and off the board,
said the Clemson president has done a good jg|
job.
"He hasn't had a chance to operate free
from interference," another trustee told The
Stale.
And a Clemson academic administrator
said Atchley has "done an excellent job of
allowing his academic administrators do
their jobs and improve academic quality."
MEANWHILE, SOME observers note
that Atchley has remained in his job since
early 1983 ? when the board was on the ^
verge of firing him ? largely bccasue a group
of trustees "in the middle" refused to fire
Atchley unless athletic director Bill McLellan
also was relieved of his duties.

that a reccnt investigation into prescription
drug use by university athletes ? which
followed NCAA basketball sanctions in 1977
and football sanctions in 1982 ? has
weakened support to keep McLellan in his
job.
According to another trustee quoted in the
article, the board "will take a concrct posi- ?
tion" on the situation in the "not-too-distant '
future."
