WASHINGTON ? Federal legislation has
been introduced that would cut by more than
half the amount of waste brought into South
Carolina for burial at the low-level nuclear
waste dump near Barnwell.
The legislation, introduced late last week by
Rep. Morris Udall, D-Arizona, would nullify
South Carolina's plan to impose regional
restrictions next year on low-level nuclear
waste shipped into the state for burial.
As the chairman of a key committee on the
issue, Udall has been a central player in the
congressional effort to write nuclear waste
burial legislation. He described his latest effY\rt

would cut the annual volume of waste buried
at the site from 1.2 million cubic feet to
500,000 cubic feet.
SOUTH CAROLINA officials, however,
would like to limit the waste shipments to
1986 to those from the Southeast and close the
facility by 1992.
A spokesman for Gov. Dick Riley said
Monday that Udall's proposal would be
studied by the governor but that Riley does
not intend to surrender his insistence on the
1986 restriction deadline.
Russ McKinney, the governor's press
secretary, said Riley intends to stick to his
ultimatum to Congress: unless a regional
waste burial agreement is ratified by Jan. 1, he
will consider closing the Barnwell site.
But McKinney said Riley believes Udall is
