* Doc Severinsen and
By M.J. Porto
Although Johnny and Eid weren't there, tlie audience at The
Township didn't seem to mind when Doc Severinsen, in concert
with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, played
his heart out on the trumpet Saturday night.
The 8 p.m. concert got oil to a rousing start with Otto
Nicolai's "Overture to 'The Merry Wives of Windsor.' " The
piece, played only by the orchestra, was an excellent example
of I tench frivolity combined with the emotional passion of
Italian music.

offered her a trip to Paris.
"I thought at first it was a hoax, but I didn't let on,"
Hawkins said Wednesday.
I etterman called Tuesday evening during the taping of

He had picked the Greenville telephone book from about
three do/en phone books in a rotating drum. Hawkins'
number was called at random, and she agreed to talk on the
air.
"Gladys, this is your lucky day," Letterman said.
"I still thought it was a hoax, but I was trying to be nice
about it," she said later.
I.etterman asked Hawkins if she wanted to bring a date,
and she said she wanted to bring her husband. Ralph.
"I'm sorry, it has to be a date," I.etterman said,
laughing. Hawkins, a retired hairdresser, didn't
believe I.etterman and asked il she Iwid tune to write down

She said she watches the show occasionally, "But not all

"Concert No. 2 for Trumpet" bv lisher l ull was the first
number performed with Severinsen, wiio roused I he rather
subdued audience into a more jovial mood.
Severinsen, dressed in black with spangles, has come a long
way since his days in Arlington, Ore. "Doe" has become
well-known because of his long-time association with "The
Johnny Carson Show."
BUT III'. SHOW'Kl) the audience Saturday evening that
lie's more than a comedian ? he's an artist.
Severinsen, who has been musical director lor the show
since 1967, has been voted Top Brass 10 times in f'lovhoy\
prestigious annual music poll.
He performs at nightclubs in I as Vegas and Atlantic City,
as well as various slops around the United States.
After the show's intermission, the orchestra returned with a
rousing "Duke Islington fantasy." I his number showed not
only the group's talent, but its diversity as well.
SKVKRINSKN THKN returned to the stage with a feu
jokes for the audience on Southern cooking, and along with
him came his musical accompaniment, 1 ony Ri//o on guitar,
Rich Lames, keyboards. Jell D'Angelo on bass, and Ron
Davis on drums.
"Doc's Classic Medley," a group of tunes that had
nothing whatsoever to do with each other, was the final and
favorite of the evening.
filled with music from 1:1 vis Presley, Hilly Joel, Jim C roce
and The Beatles, "Doe's Classic Medley" was anything but
classic.
"Hound Dog," "Hey Jude," "Time in A Bottle," and
"Just the Way You Are" were pleasant tunes made catchy and
enjoyable by Doc's trumpet, his players and the orchestra.
This may not have been the most memorable concert the
auditorium has ever seen, but i( was certainly a pleasant
experience.
