Catching up
Minorities gaining status

Although South Carolina had made some recent
progress in affirmative action, minorities, such as
blacks and women, arc still struggling to make it into
key positions in the business world.
According to Associated Press, women and blacks
arc still being "bunched at the bottom of the pay ladder"
in the state's government agencies.
In a report on the agencies' affirmative action
plans mined iiiuing tin- latRci, \tiy>uiR the'
Mark," it was determined that white females are
those benefitting most from affirmative action, while
blacks made slight gains in most of the stale government
pay levels.
Although the Human Affairs Commission, author
of the report that was placed on the desks of the
General Assembly f-riday. is pleased with its findings,
significant inequalities along the pay scale do
exist.
Not that the commission has denied this.
Jim C lyburn, state Human Affairs commissioner,
said he was upbeat about the report, but admits there
are only two black women who arc in the agencies'
highest paying jobs.
Clyburn attributed the problem to low employment
levels lor blacks and women in signif icant positions
in comparison to white males. Me said the
system has practices built into it thai perpetuate past
discriminations.
State agencies arc not alone in their perpetuation
ol disciminatory practices. Businesses of all types are
hanging on to the idea that a white man can
automatically respond better to job pressures than a
member ol a minority group.
Where is it written in stone that this is true?
Members ol minority groups are proving their
abilities every day. In the Feb. 3 Slate Xlanazifte,
several women are featured in an article, "Out of the
Icllcr's Window, Aiming lor (he Boardroom." who
have risen Irom iheir jobs as bank tellers and
secretaries. These women have overcome the
stereotypes and have proven that women in the banking
business can be more than bookkeepers.
It is encouraging to note that thinj?* are getting bettei
lor minorities, but businesses must relentlessly
continue to find those who can perform well in certain
jobs, and place them in them.
We may have come a lony way, baby, but in reality,
we si ill have a lonj* way to j.'o.

USC student disagree
To the editor:
I've made an appointment lor Ann Farmer, The Gamecock
Copy Desk Chief, at the Omega Vision Clinic located in the
Carolina Mall, first she can't find the mall, then she didn't
even see that School Kids Records has a location in the center
of the mall, which was the students number one choice in a
survey conducted last year prior to the mall's construction.
Personally, i am one of the fortunate students here at USC

reason or another do not own ;i car. I he mall brings a service
to students lor their convenience. It's like a dictionary ?
unless you use it. it isn't helpful. Having worked lor four and
a half years in a mall atmosphere, I can assure Ann that having
empty spaces when it opens is not a rarity. In fact, Columbia
Mall, (you have heard of Columbia Mall haven't you?)
had several spaces vacant when it opened and currently has 13
locations that are not leased.
lo deviate Ann's problem in finding the mall, she can
follow the easiest ol these three sets of directions:
1. Walk in the front door of the Russell Mouse and take the
stairs down to the mall
2. Inter the door located on the women's quad side of the
Russell Mouse and lake the stairs down to the mall.

And I had to come to grips with Grandmom's death.
11 seems ironic now that someone who had taught me so
much about lite would also be the one to teach me about
death.
lor the past 21 years of my life, (irandmom tried to prepare
me lor her death. "When I die, remember that it'll be the best
thing that ever happened to me. . .so don't cry." She was
buried on a cold, rainy day in St. Gertrudes Cemetery and
there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
Hut she lives on, in a way she probably didn't think about
when she pulled me aside on Thanksgiving Day to show me an
afghan she was working on. Grandmom had made one tor
each of her eight grandchildren.
It was red, white and blue and half completed. Although she
had made me one when I was six, she told nic that "this one is
the last one. You're my oldest and I want to do this for you."
When she died it was 90 percent complete, sitting alongside
the blue velvet chair she bought the previous ycdr with money
she had saved, and where she would take a nap every afternoon
after "General Hospital."

Go down the corridor located across from the campus
mail boxes until you sec the elevator on your right ? enter the

As for the Country Store being imilar to the University
Bookstore, I was unaware that the bookstore carried Coke,
pot pics. Bloody Mary mix, Crunch and Munch, Doriios and
other such products. Nor was I avsarc that the University
Bookstore accepted cash cards; or stayed open until 10 p.m.
Also, in my four years here at USC, I seem to have missed the
homemade fudge department here at the bookstore and for
this. I apologize?
Having done my research before I wrote this reply to your
article. I took some time to speak to merchants who are
located in the Carolina Mall, and have found them very pleas.,,1

Christmas L-.ve rolled around and Cirandpop came in from
the cold with the afghan in his hand. His neighbor finished it
and had given it to him (hat morning.
Now the blanket sits in my dorm room and I still can't shake
the thought that she's gone ? it'll take a long time. I.ife goes
on without Grandmom, but It's better because she had been
part of it.
When this appears in the paper, I'll cut it out and send it to
Westfield, just like everything else that I've written for The ^
Gamecock. But this time (irandpop will be the one who will *
open the mail and see what I had to say this week.
