Fraud. Continued trom page 1
SOUTHERN BKLI. is educating its
customers about prevention of STAN
number fraud. Information on STAN
number fraud and its consequences is
nvnilnhli* in ihp fHcnhoni? directory
and in the Carolina Community
manual. Frequent bill inserts also provide
tips on the prevention of STAN
number fraud.
Students arc advised to keep the
number confidential and to guard it as
they would the secret code number on
a banking or credit card, because it is
just like any other kind of major credit
card in value and importance.
Some students became frustrated
with the STAN system and cancel their
numbers. Two such students arc
Marilyn Hcmingwayh and Troy Suber.
Both said they cancelled their numbers
after receiving bills when they made no
calls.
"Some students have never reported
any problems," Strickland said.
"There have been cases where a student
has kept the same number for
four years.
IN TIIK spring, the university furnishes
Southern Bell with a list of all
siuuems a iki mcy arc usMgucu u
number. If the STAN card is not
returned to Southern Bell, and the student
does not call to cancel it, chances
are he will he billed at some point.
A student who has frequent problems
with his number should have it
changed, and the student who does not
want a STAN number should cancel it
upon receipt. This same action should
be taken if the card is misplaced.
In the fall semester, a student who
wants a STAN number should call
southern Hell and request one.
lili/abeih l.angley, director ol
r USC's Office of Communications
said, "Proposals were made to get rid
of the STAN system within the last
year in a rate case, but the Public Service
Commission rejected it."
