The Democrats would not reveal the specifics of the pro- j

the plans in detail at a news conference Tuesday. ?
Rep. Alex Harvin earlier said the proposed legislation
would give Gov. Riley "a club" to use in his effort to close the

waste it stores from out-of-state.

H resolution discussed which would "wipe out Chem-Nuclear."

"I really don't think that in America, any meeting of <
legislators ought to be closed to the public except those concer- ]
ning national defense and foreign affairs, and both of those
are beyond the pale of this body," he said. i

After Democratic Caucus metQ

But he added, "It would have been impossible to open the
neeting to the public without opening it up to the
Republicans, and we needed to discuss out strategy and hamner
out differences between members of the caucus.
"We have been an unwieldy majority in the past, with a
nembership ranging from ultra-conservatives to ultra-liberals,
3ut we feel the whole party can come together on this issue."
"We will announce a comprehensive answer to the problem
af low-level nuclear waste disposal in the state on Tuesday,"
Marvin said.
Harvin said the Democrats discussed the entire issue of
nuclear waste in South Carolina, from the beginning of its
disposal to the current status, along with other issues Riley
raised in his address to the General Assembly earlier this
month.
