Former Egyptian first lady Jihan Sadat began her USC
teaching career oy joKing witn rresiaent James Hoiaerman,
calling him "Boss."
Sadat, former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's widow,
started teaching a three-credit "Women in Egyptian Culture,"
course Monday afternoon, and was greeted by a standing ovation
from her students, many of whom were older than 30.
The class includes undergraduate, graduate and special
students, including two retired teachers from Greenville who
?^lan to drive to Columbia each Monday for the class.
SADAT SAID, "I believe being here I will learn as I am going
to teach."
Women in America and Egypt are similar but differ in some
ways, she said.
"Thnr?? urp litflp thinoc ihut wp Hiffi*r anH innnv thinoc thnl

arc practicing."
Women usually makeas much as men in Egypt, but don't
have as much freedom as American women, she said.
"WOMEN HERE, they have a freedom. They feel their
?:>wn identity, which Egyptian women do not have.
"Women here took their time going through all the stages

was only done in 20 years.
"Still, we have many reactions against women's rights. I
hope I will let students know about Egypt mainly, and they
will have an idea about the rights of Arab women," she said.
So that women can go out and work, Sadat said, the Egyptian
government is trying to organize child care centers. cl
w
"IT IS working. We arc trying to do our best to give more th
nurseries to working women. But we are a poor country and
we can't do all we like, but we are trying," she said. E
a\ Sadat, who also taught at Cairo University in Egypt, said ai

"I hope 1 will set a good example to come and teach. I al
always respect women who have a role in their life ? not Mrs.
So and So. 1 respect and admire very much the working
women," she said. ai
Another topic she discussed was abortion. ,
tr
"AS A Moslem country, abortion is against our religion tl
unless there is some danger to the mother. It's forbidden. I si
prefer to prevent the pregnancy from the beginning. It's much
healthier for the mother. A

society which doesn't. It makes a big difference. I believe in ei

In her lecture, Sadat described three sectors of women in
gyptian culture: rural (60 percent), small town (25 percent) w
id large cities (15 percent). p
The rural sector has a high rate of illiteracy. Reforms do not e<
ffect these women as much as women in large cities, she said.
ti
THE EGYPTIAN constitution assures women's freedom
rid provides health, child care and family planning.
Small town women are better off materially, but the strict t<
aditions of the East have held them back and until recently,
ley had to be content with isolation, house and family, she
lid. /
"Now three out of eight women elccted to the National u
issembly are from small towns," she said.
Women in citics are offered the most opportunities in n
ducation and finances.

"LITERACY RATES arc higher in the cities," Sadat said,
lit Arab society and its views of women are still "vague,
tadowy and full of contradictions."
The Arab Revolution of 1952 was the strongest force behind
omen's equal status in society. The revolution freed the peole
of colonialism, raised the standard of living and maintainJ
freedom once it was attained, she said.
Another gap, between young and old, is because of educaon,
Sadat said. "Mothers live in the past and they can't cope
'ith their children easily."
"One of the most important changes facing Arab women
aday is to try and understand their inner self," she said.
"WE SHOULD not be surprised that the personality of the
irab women is not solidified. Such a lack of firmness delays
/omen's progress and this hinders the progress of all society.
"We must change the society from the inside. Such change
riust come to the whole community before new goals can be
