Alumnus manag
By Tracy Mixson
He's worked both the 1984 Summer and Winter
Olympics, five Sugar Bowls and countless major
sporting events. But for ABC-TV booth manager
Raymond Goodrich, the 40th Gator Bowl Classic
J was special.
Only two weeks before, Goodrich graduated
r from USC with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Goodrich began working with the network as a
sophomore when he met an ABC employee in a bar
and was invited to watch what goes on "behind the
scenes." As any good story would go, the network
needed an extra worker, and Goodrich's professional
career began.
FIVE YEARS and many miles later, he says his
job seems different now that he's out of school.
"While I was in school, it was more fun than
work," he said. "It was a lot of work, but I worked
with nice people and expenses were paid; you
couldn't beat it.
"But now, I look at it from a whole different
point of view; it's more of a profession than parttime
work."
In the month since his graduation, Goodrich says
he's learned, "It's not what you know, it's who you
know" in broadcasting.
"IT'S TRITE, but it's true," he said. "Connections
are everything. My contacts with the networks
have been invaluable."
Goodrich's co-workers use words like "dependable,"
"responsible" and "professional" to
describe him. Lynn Swann, former Pittsburgh
Steeler and now sideline commentator for ABC, is a
good friend of the USC graduate.
"Ray is very good at his job," Swann said. "He's
very professional. When you give him a responsibilityor
a job to do, he gets it done. That's what
everyone at ABC looks for in terms of having a
future with the network: a person's ability to take
responsibility, handle it and do it well.
"In addition, Ray always puts himself in a position
to learn more. He's efficient and organized,
and he knows what he's doing."
LEE GROSSCUP, ABC's color commentator
for the Gator Bowl broadcast, said Goodrich
helped him by giving the announcer background information
on the Gamecocks.
"For a color commentator, preparing for college
fnnthall oamp? i?t lik<? rrammino fr?r pnams all venr
long," he said. "It's nice if someone who's been
close to a team can give you some insights and little
nuances that may have occurred during the season.
"Ray did that, and I put them down in my cheat
sheets. He's been a big help, and he's easy to work
with."
At 23, Goodrich was the youngest worker in the
Gator Bowl broadcastin^tyooth. Did that make a

JOSEPH GARNETT / The Gwracock
Raymond Goodrich, a USC graduate, works as booth
manager for ABC-TV at the Gator Bowl Dec. 28.
"ABSOLUTELY NOT," says Swann. "It
doesn't effect the nrndnetion in anv wav. hecause
age is not the factor. It's handling the responsiblity
and the assignment.
"Once you've proven you can do that, as Ray
has, then there is never a problem."
Grosscup said he believes Goodrich's professionalism
will help him in the future.
"Ray has a very professional attitude. If a person
can acquire that early on, then they have a chance
to grow in the industry. I think he will.
"It's exciting 1o watch young people get a
chance, come in and apply themselves to go for^ard.
I hope Ray does, bec?se I think he has a
good opportuhity to d^'that. \
