Gamecock ' By Robert O'Connor Ip discussing the films of 1984, the worst movies are unavoidably easier, to recount. The list of critically disastrous films is seemingly endless, while the record of worthwhile productions is em barassir^ly brief. PLACES- IN THE HEART Maybe this is a cliched choice for best film, but "Places in the Heart" hit right on target with Sally Field's brilliant performance. Field deserves the best actress Oscar as a widowed farm wife who must suddenly face reality and being alone. Farm movies were a hot commodity in 1984, but "Places in the Heart" was an emotional triumph. SILKWOOD This controversial film made its Columbia debut well after its national unveiling in 1983 and shows Meryl Streep in one of her most demanding roles. Fresh from the glorious "Sophie's Choice," Streep stars as nuclear activist Karen Silkwood, a real-life character who died in mysterious circumstances. Supporting perfor-' mances from Cher and Kurt vWft. V ^hgc WpB "Irreconcilable Differences" stars Drew Barrymore. r~~~? REAR WINDOW Re-released last spring, Alfred Hitchcock's classic mystery outdistanced the majority of newer releases. Jimmy Stewart and the breathtaking Grace Kelly star in this intricate mystery that demands the attention of its audience. Cinematography and careful direction make this film timeless. ROMANCING THE STONE Michael Douglas's sleeper hit teamed him with the enticingly talented Kathleen Turner. The result is a romantic adventure comedy that emitted a very entertaining chemistry. Maybe not as intelligent or realistic as other recent films, "Romancing The Stone" was well-rounded enjoyment. GREYSTOKE Hugh Hudson's direction is superior and John Alcot's cinematography wonderfully vivid. Christopher Lambert stars as the legendary Tarzan in this epic masterpiece. THE FLAMINGO KID Expected to be another stereotypically awful teen film, Garry Marshall's "The Flamingo Kid" was surprisingly simple and meaningful. Matt Dillon's acting is astonishingly improved in this film of change, maturity and chances. Supporting performaces from Richard Crenna and Hector Elizondo helped complete the excellent mood of "The Flamingo Kid." GAWK) TALKS Sidney Lumet's latest film drew mixed opinion, but "Garbo Talks" developed an initially weak storyline into a warm, engrossing film. Star Anne Bancroft is touching, as is Ron Silver as the son who ignores his own life to complete his mother's. "Garbo Talks" offered a touching film experience. STAR 80 This true and very disturbing story starred Mariel Hemingway and the menacing Eric Roberts. "Star 80," Bob Fosse's latest directorial effort, displayed a harsh and disturbing view of the Dorothy Stratten murder. "Star 80" is not as entertaining as it is compelling. COUNTRY Jessica Lange is sure to garner a third Oscar nomination as a farm wife who battles against a defeated husband (Sam Shepard) aim inc possioie loss 01 ner iarm. Lange's project was full of cliches and didn't come close to the excellence of its rival, "Places in the Heart," but the performances were superior. IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES Though a surprising choice, this film exposed actress Shelley Long as one of the brightest talents around. Ryan O'Neal and Drew Barrymore were fair and the plot weak, but Long shone brightly. .?^ I # 1 HZsZsaSI npi : (-IS I . lers, casts i The worst... The list of terrible films in 1984 is quite close to the list of big moneymakers in 1984. Disgusting as it may seem, low-qualify films are the most successful. BOLERO Bo Derek's much laughed at "Bolero" earned hei and husband John a reputation foi severly low quality. Destined to b< a cult classic because of its hilarious storyline, costuming anc blatant sex, "Bolero" is Be Derek's artificial attempt to be t virgin. "Bolero" is easily the wors film of the decade. ANGEL Hollywood exploited it; sleazy elements in "Angel" am definitely came out looking thi fool. Horrible actress Donnj Wilkes stars as the by-now famou "honor student by day Hollywood hooker by night," an< ends up ruining an already patheti acting career. New World Picture has even dared to produce a sequc for this year. Hookers have neve been more uninteresting. FRIDAY THE 13TH-TH1 FINAL CHAPTER Our frien Jason strikes a fourth time an strikes nothing but disgust i anyone's mind. Director Josep Zito sends the usual carload c playful teenagers into th murderous woods and ends u repeating himself horribly. Zit i may pretend to have ended th ridiculous saga, but look ft i Chapter 5 in April. Blood, sex an senseless killings have no place i entertainment. CHILDREN OF THE COR Stephen King should hide his fa< in shame for allowing his sho story to be filmed in such revolting manner.
