CHARLESTON ? Former state Sen.
Paul Cantrell died early yesterday when the
twin-engine plane he was piloting crashed
and burned in a wooded area near the fogshrouded
Charleston Executive Airport on
Johns Island.
The 36-year-old Cantrell, who was returning
from Columbia to pick up some papers
and a witness he needed for a State Election
Commission protest of his election defeat
last month, tried to land four times at

was diverted to Johns Island about 4:30
a.m., said Charles Green, deputy Charleston
County coroner.
The area supervisor of the control tower at
Charleston International, Edward Wiseman,
said a pilot identifying himself as Cantrell
spent and hour attempting to land there
before proceeding to the smaller Johns
Island facility.
THE PLANE disappeared from radar
screens about 5 a.m. The wreckage was
found shortly before 8 a.m. by a Coast
Guard helicopter after a search by the Coast
Guard, Charleston County Police and State
Wildlife Department officers.
The plane -went down in a wooded area
about a mile from the runway on a plantation
owned by Dr. A.E. Rawl, the father of
state Rep. Vic Rawl of Charleston.
Several treetops were clipped off, and the
wreckage was spread over an area about the
size of a football field. Some parts of the
plane were hanging from tree limbs.
"It busted up pretty good," said Maj.
Michael Boggs of the Charleston County
Police.
"THERE ARE pieces scattered around, it
did burn," he said, adding that whether there
was an explosion is unsure.
Federal Aviation Administration
ivestigators arrived on the scene later to
begin a probe into the cause of the crash.

Boggs said the remains were burned
"beyond recognition," and Dr. Sandra Con
rady, cnariesion ^.ouiuy mcui^ai tAcmnnvi,
was to conduct an autopsy yesterday afternoon
to make a*positive identification.
But family members were advised yesterday
morning that the pilot was Cantrell, and
funeral arrangements were scheduled for flj
tomorrow at Grace Episcopal Church in
Charleson. All members of the General
Assembly were invited to honorary
pallbearers.
Cantrell, a Democrat, served in the state
House of Representatives from 1979 through
1980 and in the State Senate since 1981.

that hearing had been scheduled for ,
yesterday.
The younger Rawl said he spent Wednesday
with Cantrel, and the former senator was
making a quick trip to Charleston to pick up
additional materials for the hearing.
"That's the kind of person he was," Rawl
said. "If something needed to be done, he
would do it, no matter what time it was."
Gov. Dick Riley said he was "tremendously
saddened" at Cantrell's death. "He was a
fighter for what he believed in, a person of
strong convictions."
LT. GOV. Mike Daniel said he was
"shocked and saddened" by the death.

the victim gathered behind a police line while
horses grazed peacefully in nearby fields.
"He's the most human person 1 ever knew.
He listened to every word you said," said
Hattie Siegel of James Island, who had
helped Cantrell gather material for his elec?
tion protest.
"I just have a feeling it can't be him," she
said, fighting back tears. "Look at that
