All-America titles

Within two days after winning USC's Most Valuable Player
awards for 1984, James Seawright and Del Wilkes continued
to add to their trophy case.
The two athletes were named co-winners of the Steve
Wadiak MVP Award at the Gamecocks' annual football banquet
Tuesday night, and have since earned several AllAmerica
honors.
Wilkes, an offensive guard, was named to both the Walter
Camp and Kodak All-America first teams.
In addition, the 6-3, 255-pound Irmo native was named offensive
captain of the 1984 Gamecock squad, along with
special-teams' leader Harry South and defensive captain
Bryant Gilliard.
"It's exciting," Wilkes said of his national honor. "But it's
also surprising, because 1 never thought of myself as an AilAmerican.
"I felt I had a good year, ?nd it was probably due to the
hard work we (the offensive line) did this summer in the
weight room. We really wanted to better ourselves, and I think
we did."
Seawright, USC's strongside linebacker, was selected to the
24-man All-America team voted by the Football Writers
Association of America.
USC's four-year letter winner and defensive player of the
year was also named to the second-team squad by Football
News, along with Gilliard, a free safety.
