Page 8 ? November 28, 1984 Opinion THE GAMECOCK USC arts center: wait until it hatches Finally, it appears that USC and Columbia will get an arts center. USC, the city and Richland County have Dlans to iointlv build a fine arts center at Assembly Street, across Greene Street from Carolina Coliseum. Columbia needs an arts center desperately, especially if it ever wants to become a "big" or "important" city. Left with only the cavernous Carolina Coliseum, the old and often inappropriate ? not to mention small ? Township Auditorium, and a few small theatres, Columbia just doesn't have the facilities needed to host major performing arts. It hasn't appeared to outsiders as a cultured place. Now, maybe it will. As for USC. an arts center is lonp. overdue. The university boasts excellent theatre, dance, and music departments, but has far too few places to show them off. It has built, in the past two decades, a huge basketball arena, a beautiful new baseball field and spring sports complex, and, of course, an addition to the football stadium. USC might appear to outsiders as lacking concern for the arts. Could it be that the university, a prime builder of the state's culture, is finally giving the arts their due? There's a caution, however. Pardon the cliche, but if ever there were a time to not count unhatched eggs as a crop of chickens, it is now. County Councilman James Leventis said he's been hearing talk of an arts center for "a long time." A look through back issues of The Gamecock and other publications finds stories of the university announcing plans for an arts center since at least 1973. The center, in planners' minds, has moved all over campus, and has been various sizes and had sundry floorplans. But this plan seems to be closer to becoming reality than any other previous plan. There may be one sticking point, however. (JSC's half of the center is to be paid for by a donor, now anonymous because he or she hasn't settled on terms. There is a possibility the donor may back out, however, if the city and county move too slowly. Richland County Council has given initial approval to issuing bonds to pay for its share, and final approval could come before the end of the year. But some members of council have politicized the issue and are delaying movement on the bonds. This political bickering must stop. If there's another setback, an arts center may never be built. The cultural future of USC and the Midlands is at risk here. At USC, it could be the future of art students that's at stake. Inexcusable, but apologies An editorial of Monday, Nov. 17 said that President James Holderman said the Russell House Mall would open by Oct. 15. He actually said it would open by Nov. 15. Such an error is inexcusable, and The Gamecock apologizes for it. Gamecock Editor in Chief | David Hill j Managing Editor > Leslie J. Dun son | Copy Desk Chief . We need to examine our university policies, their effects on the campus community and how we can implement them in an equitable and productive manner. At this point, the task force has generated a number of options in an WIB's contest To the Editor: This is in response to a previous letter to the editor concerning the organization Women In Business, which is sponsoring the "Best Legs In Business" contest.
