From Staff Reports
An intimate evening at the theatre, complete
with music by the inimitable James
Taylor and personal revelations by the
characters to the audience in the style of "A
Chorus Line," will be featured when Studs
Terkel's play "Working" is presented Nov.
29-Dec. 2 and Dec. 5-8 at USC's Drayton
Hail.
Ann Dreher, an instructor in the depart?
ment of theatre and speech, will direct the
show, which she calls "a musical revue."
Most members of the cast of 11 men and
11 women will play blue-collar workers who
describe their lifestyles and. professions in
monologues and songs.
No one performer is the star of the production.
"Everyone has his or her moment in the
sun. Everyone takes center stage at one point
or another," said Dreher.
Theatergoers will be familiar with much of
the cast. Soisette Ricks, who will play Nora
the magazine editor, was Ruby in Workshop

: acting with
logues, talent
sity and community productions in the past
three years, will play Dolores the waitress
and A1 the parking lot attendant.
Each performer will appear before the audience
to sing or talk about his work and how
much he hates or loves his job. The audience
will learn the trials and tribulations of being
a waitress, a trucker, a businessman, a tie
salesman and a newsboy through spirited,
colorful language taken from the 1972 Terkel
book.
Even Terkel was surprised at the eloquence
of many he interviewed: the steelworker who
takes pride in his work but just wants a little
credit for it; the waitress who gives tender
living taic iu ner regular customers; and a
host of others.
Director Dreher took more of her adaptation
of the play than from the book. "The
book, to me, is very thought-provoking, and
I wanted the play to be the same way."
In addition to scripts, Dreher gave all cast
members copies of the Terkel interviews.
Even the songs are closely connected to the
Terkel interviews.
The two-act play will last 90 minutes. Admission
is $4.50 for the public and $2.50 for
students. Sunday matinees will be $4 and $2.
