Some say it's a small world, and in the case
of Sugarcreek, it seems to be true.
The band, based in Charlotte, N.C., will
be on the TV show "Star Search" Nov. 24.
In Columbia, the show will air on WL.TX
at 6 and 11 p.m. Sunday.
NAMED AFTER a city sewer, this beachmusic
band switched to rock 'n' roll to
broaden their audience and their creativity.
Rick Lee, keyboard player and vocalist,
said the band wanted to get more national attention
and make national albums, 4'so we
went with rock to appeal to more people."
The six-member group gained national attention
with the hit "What A Night," which
went to "American Bandstand."
Lee, who has been with the band since it
was formed 13 years ago, said that Myrtle
Beach has been their training ground.
"MYRTLE BEACH has been a home and
training ground for years," he said. "A lot
of the old fans still come back to see the
band."
The group's new album, "Rock The Night
Away," contains 12 original cuts, including
the title song, which is getting extensive
airplay throughout the Carolinas.
The group's last album, "Fortune,"
received regional success that they hoped to
promote to national success.
The other band members include Mike

SUGARCREEK HAS attracted an audience
throughout the Southeast and has
played with REO Speedwagon, Tony Carey,
Huey Lewis and the News, the SOS Band,
Cheap Trick, Poco, the Outlaws, Wet Willie,
Pablo Cruise and Point Blank.
In addition to their original music, Sugarcreek
plays music by AC/DC, Asia, Journey,
Van Halen, John Cougar and Loverboy.
"We're doing our best to put the Charlotte
area on the national music scene," Lee said.
The group's changing style and musical interests
are evident in their new music.
"Our emphasis now is on our own music,"
Clark said.
"WK HAVK had big-name record executives
call us and keep a check on what we
are up to."
According to Lee, the band's ability to adjust
to change is the key to their success.
"We can flow with the time. We've
covered a lot of time and a lot of changes in
music. It's a lot of fun and a lot of hard
work," he said.
