they will investigate student behavior
at the Sept. 8 UVa-Clemson football
game in the wake of complaints that
visiting Tiger fans were subjected to
vandalism, profanity and showers of
garbage.
UVa Athletic Director Richard D.
Schultz said the probe was prompted
by a Clemson faculty member's letter

"I have never witnessed such crude,
immature and senseless behavior as I
witnessed at your stadium," Marty

cooperative education, wrote in the letter
to Hereford.

Penny Thompson said she had
stayed in the motor home with her sick
daughter while her husband went into
the stadium.
"The motor home lurched and I
knew someone was on the back ladder.
My child had just fallen asleep and
woke terrified and screaming when
people began jumping on the roof."
Thompson was quoted in the Greenville
newspaper as saying she saw UVa
students yank the antenna off the
motor home, rip its vent, scratch its
custom tire cover and smash a taillight
causing $136 in damage.
The students were dressed in "the
typical blazers, dress shirts, slacks and
ties," according to Thompson, who
added she saw "four different bands
of students" demanding liquor from
tailgaters while another attempted to
break into motor homes.
Schullz said Tuesday he was surpris
ed he had not heard about the incidents
earlier, but said the allegations
were serious enough to merit an
investigation.
He said he was concerned by a letter

sexist slurs.
"If all these things happened, we're
certainly embarrassed," Schultz said
Monday. "We are going to check out
the validity of the complaints, check
ing with our security people to see it
they noticed anything unusual at the
game."
Clemson defeated UVa 55-0, including
an aerial touchdown in the
game's waning moments that prompted
one UVa player to say after the
game that the visitors showed "no
class."
Williams conceded Clemson's wellpublicized
desire to humiliate other
Atlantic Coast Conference teams since
being placed on probation for
recruiting violations may have spurred
Cavalier fan reaction.
"It is a provocation," he said. "But
