The deciding factor is the student's annual income, he said. Single parent students with an annual income of S7,()0() or less can apply for AFDC at the local county office, Davis said. AFDC WILL provide a Medicaid card and about $60 per month to the child. A Medicaid card is also given to the mother, he said. As another benefit, the AFDC program provides day care centers for working mothers. Mothers who work will be guaranteed a slot for their child in one of their county centers, he said. All day care centers are licensed and inspected regularly to insure the safety and well being of the child. Davis said. To receive AFDC, the single mother must sign an agreement that she will pursue child support if not presently receiving money. Also, she has to enter a work-study program if unemployed. The work-study program attempts to place the mother in a job, he said, "to become a full tax-paying citizen." ALSO, FOOI) stamps are available to USC students if they f 920 S. Research statistics show 25,000 people in Richland County are receiving food stamps, Davis said. There is no available data showing how many students participate in the program. Student Affairs also could not specify how many students receive food stamps. Applications for food stamps and AFDC are accepted at the Richland County Social Services Office at 2020 Hampton St. OTHER PROGRAMS arc available to USC students through the Human Services Programs. Such services include counseling for sexual abuse victims and battered spouses and protection services for children, he said. These services provide temporary confidential shelters for victims around the state. All shelters and their whereabouts are confidential, he said. Anyone in need of these services is urged to contact the Richland County office on Hampton Street in the old Columbia Hospital building. All department services will be handled in confidence, he said. | one coupon per person per visit "1 ^ J Buy One j | Delicious Pimento j ? j Burger Basket J S j & Get Second One for j | $1.00 j I w/this ad & USC I.D.
