Dr. I ashley, who has held this position

Most of his patients arc referred to

degrees in either psychology, education
or social work.
Lashley treats illnesses such as long
term depression, schizophrenia, manic
depression and omlint? disorders. The
counselors handle the less severe eases.
Ihe majority of (lie long term therap>
cases and psychological testing is
handled by the Psychological Service
Center, located on Pendleton Street.
I he Hall Psychiatric Institute, located
on ihe South Carolina State Hospital
campus, also shares in the case loads

5UUUIIU.
Dr. Lashlcy sees an estimated 30 patients
per week. He said an increase in
students seeking treatment is seen at
the beginning of a semester, usually
the months of September, October and
F ebruary, March.
Most of his patients are older
students. Some of these students are
married or divorced and have trouble
coping with the pressures of school.
Some sutler from depression. Not
many younger students or freshmen
come for treatment, and the\ don't
seem to have many serious problems,
Lashlex said.
The most common problem among
his patients is depression, with an\iet\
running a close second, l.ashley said.
In the treatment til his patients Dr.
I ashlcy talks and listens to his patients
to help them through their problem.

ere to help
Medication, such as tranquilizers, is
dispensed depending on the duration
and degree of the depression or
anxiety.
The most frustrating illness to treat
is anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder
usually found among young girls,
Lashley said, adding that there is no
known medication to treat anorexia
and psychological therapy doesn't
seem to help. Because a person with
anorexia has a distorted picture of how
I hey look they won't believe that they
are too thin and continue to diet
excessively.
Lashley said that in the past he never
encountered any cases of anorexia, but
in the last few years he has seen a
number of cases.
