Ethnic festival to !
By Patrick Jean
An ethnic celebration takes place Saturday at The MannSimons
Cottage: Museum of African-American Culture when
it sponsors the 6th annual "Jubilee: Festival of Heritage."
ine iesuvai, on museum grounds at Kicniand and Marion
streets, promises to both entertain and educate, said Cece
Byers Johnson, curator of the museum.
The festival opens at 1 p.m. with a parade of AfricanAmerican
ceremonial umbrellas created by Columbia children
in a workshop last summer.
"EACH SUMMER, the museum has workshops for
children to learn and participate in cultural traditions. We
want children to be proud of their heritage," Johnson said.
The Ueorgia Sea Island Singers make their second appearance
at the festival with shows at 1:30 and 3:15 p.m.
A local break-dancing group, the Twi-light Breakdancers,
will pop, lock and rock at 2 p.m.
The Columbia Cultural Ensemble will perform "message
music," mostly about political issues, at 2:20 p.m.
THF RFnFPMFR'C Hrtcnpl Phnir r?f ri>ntril rnrroo
tional Institution will perform gospel music at 2:45 p.m.
Following the second show of the Georgia Sea Island
Singers, mini-workshops and demonstrations will be presented
on break-dancing, double-dutch jump rope, traditional hair
styling and gardening.
"The workshops are meant to present the latest in AfricanAmerican
cultural traditions," Johnson said.
"Most of the local talent here represents the latest in
African-American urban street games. Break-dancing is the
current trend, while double-dutch jump rope and 'message
music' are other examples," she said.
ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL occur at 4 p.m., followed at
4:15 p.m. by the American Festival's Chuck Davis AfricanAmerican
Dance Ensemble of Duke University.

Throughout the performances, books, food, Haitain and
African crafts, prints, posters, cards and jewelery will be on
sale at the festival marketplace. Used toys and other items will
be available at the flea-market table.
"Each year, we try to bring in acts with performances that
have the most substance. We advertised for local acts to participate
earlier this year, and we selected the acts on their willingness
to participate." she said.
"We looked for acts that would entertain and stimulate. I
hope those at the festival will take timet o pay close attention
to the local talent," she said.
The public and festival participants are encouraged to dress
in ethnic and-or old-fashioned clothes.
"WE WANT to do more than have a festival here. We want

"This is a chance for many people from the community to
get involved in soemthing, and it's a great way to kick off our
new educational year.
"I hope many USC students will attend. It's an opportunity
to be educated on the cultural traditions of the AfricanAmerican
community and see how those traditions functioned
in a historical and contemporary context," she said. ^
THE MANN-SIMONS Cottage is operated by the Richland
County Historic Preservation Commission. There is no admission
fee for the festival, but donations are strongly encouraged
to defray the cost of the festival and to contribute to the
museum's development of other educational programs.
"A lot of the African-American pride and heritage that will
be exemnlified at the festival is here every day at the museum.
Don't make the festival your only trip to the museum,"
Johnson said.
