Work study prograi
for earning money
By Roni Bea Kayne th
Some students get financial aid the old- ov
fashioned wav? thev earn it. D;
The Office of Student Financial Aid and
Scholarships sponsors the College Work- en
Study Program, which awards jobs to over pc
1,500 students each year. The CWS award St
allows students to work part time while going de
to school and earn a portion of the money to
needed to pay for their education. lo;
"The College Work-Study Program was wl
created so that students could earn money instead
of borrowing it and gain work fic
experience before entering the 'real world."' io
said Ray Davis, College Work-Study sti
coordinator. tic
The program is based on student need and ci;
the availability of funds, according to Davis. tic
To apply for CWS, students need to file a lo
FFS (Family Financial Statement),which is he
part of the American College Testing (ACT) fu
program. "Students wishing to receive a Lc
CWS award fnr fhp 1Q85-8fi vpar ran filp co
their FFS forms after January 1. The application
deadline must be met in order for 17
funds to be assessed," Davis said. w<
Once the preliminary information is com- av
pleted, students eligible for financial aid will be
receive a financial aid package and have the sa
opportunity to choose among various options
available. These options include finan- C
cial aid, student loans and the work-study de
program. Ai

notified in the summer and must fill out a na
payroll form of expected earnings. After the na
award is made, students must work to in
receive the funds. T1
This program is unique because students Sc
place themselves in their own jobs, Davis F<
said, adding that freedom, flexibility and in- fi<
dependence allow students to pick the job di

avis said.
To assist students in finding work-study
iployment, a job advertisement board is

udents match their skills with the job {
scription posted on the board." The botm
line is not to interfere with your course
ad. Most employers are very understanding
hen it comes to school work," Davis said.
Students can receive guidance from the Of:e
of Financial Aid at any time during the i
b search. "We sit down with them (the
udents) and point them in the right direc- J

aid, we direct them to the NDSL (Na- i

an program. Furthermore, if we cannot
>nor their request among the options or
nds available, the Guaranteed Student

lid.
Jobs are available through approximately
5 non-profit organizations, on campus as
:11 as off. "A large number of jobs are still
ailable and students need to be ready to
gm me joo searcn immediately," Davis *
