urinaii says
he board of trustees in December.
Pointing out that Carolina has
broken the "abundant bodies synirome"
and moved to strengthen its
standards and reduce its number of
students, Hoiderman credited the
faculty with helping to improve the
quality of students at the university.
"That has proven costly in the
higher education system with an
enrollment-driven funding formula,"
he said, but added that the move
toward greater selectivity offers
Carolina the opportunity to meet its
problems with long-term resolutions.
Acknowledging that, for only the second
time in the last 10 years the
general formula for higher education
has been fully funded, Holderman
nonetheless warned the faculty that
state appropriated funds account tor
only 53 percent of the university's total
budget.
"Clearly the movement toward a
larger percentage of the university's
budget coming from non-appropriated
sources prompts even more aggressive
efforts at private fund raising and in
the generation of funded research contracts
and opportunities," Holderman
said.
