monthly rental lee of SI 5 per square foot or 8
percent gross sales before tax deductions, for
the first year.
The second year, merchants must pay SI5
per square foot or 9 percent gross sales.
The third year, merchants will be asked to
pay SI5 per square foot or 10 percent of
gross sales.
No leases have been signed as of Sept. 1,
though several merchants have expressed
continued interest in the project, said Wertz,
who noted UbL began interviewing merchants
Monday.

The basement shops will open as soon as
the merchants have been selected, the leases
signed and the final renovations completed,
said Miles, whom has assumed leasing opera
tions, as he is in charge of university vending
and retailing.
"It'll probably be a while before the thing
is actually opened," Miles said.
"We're going to open it as soon as possible.
There's no sense that they (businesses)
can't get in there," said Wert/., noting that a
travel agency interested in a lease needs to
open as soon as possible to provide transportation
services before the holidays.
WERTZ SAID each store will open as
soon as they are ready, and a grand opening
ceremony will be held after most of the stores

similar to what a regular mall would do,"
said Wert/. "We're holding off 'til a holiday
when the ceremony can be tied in to a theme
as Columbus Day."
