"Best Defense" needs a good lawyer. The f
television commercials are funnier than the \
film itself and totally misrepresent the o
pioduet. t
Lured into the theater by promises of s
Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy making f
merry together, the movie-goer finds (after
the cash exchanges hands) that the two fun- t
nymen never even exchange glances, much r
less quips.
"Best Defense" is a disappointing effort I
that wastes the talents of actress Kate Cap- <
shaw, Murphy, Moore and screenwriters t
Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck. Not even 1
mildly amusing, the film has no redeeming i
virtues. s
Composed of two separate storylines, the c
film jumps back and forth, trying to tie them
together. It doesn't work. \
Moore's story is set in 1982. He plays an I
inept, Durnt out engineer who will lose his r
job and, consequently, his wife, if his current c
project (a gizmo for a new tank) fails. He
lusts after his supervisor, has a brush with an I
industrial spy and the FBI and ends up with a c
stolen computer disk that is the answer P

The connection, in very simplistic terms, is

Murphy goes out with a bang two years later.
Good comedy doesn't need an R rating,
)ecause good comedy doesn't depend on sex
ind rough language to make people laugh. In
he case ot "Best Defense," the sex, rough
anguage, an ? R rating doesn't help ? it still
sn't funny. Both R-rated items are blatant,
implistic, unnecessary and uncomfortably
)bvious.
Katz and Huyck (whose last collaboration
vas "Indiana Jones and the Temple of

ethics (or lack thereof), but that
loesn't work either.
