among five foundations in the USC System, and one among
three on the Columbia campus, the other two being Carolina
Research and Development,and the Business Partnership

"Each year, the administration makes recommendations to

This practice, whereby a sum of money is invested, and the
earnings are used to supplement specific faculty salaries,
enables the school to retain outstanding professors, and to
compete with corporations and universities for others, he said.
The funds will also be used to attract gifted students on a
national basis. "Federal funds have been the nucleus for a.J

Vlahoplus said.
TO ATTRACT gifted high school students, programs that
demonstrate quality and intellectual challenge should be
substituted for the customarv tours and sneeches directed
toward the prospective student. Vlahoplus said this, coupled
with aid, should work as an incentive.
According to Financial Aid News, a publication of the USC
financial aid office, the number of students receiving institutionally
awarded scholarships has more than quadrupled from
300 to 1,300. The amount of money awarded has increased
from $300,000 to over a million dollars through USC.
