Track runner gaii
respect from coa
By Kalli Freas vs
Coming into his last competitive season of ?
conege iracK, senior verion Knodes's "quiet
confidence" has gained him the respect of his
coaches and fellow runners.
"He's a leader," said USC track coach
Charlie Strong. "All the runners on the team ^
look up to him." "
Rhodes, a transfer from Furman where he
played defensive back prior to coming to r
Carolina in 1982, said he wasn't satisfied
with the Paladins system. 2
t
"I WASN'T getting what I wanted out of
football," he said. " 1 rack gives me a chance ri
to see what I can really do as an individual."
Currently Rhodes holds the school record
in the indoor 600-yard dash (1:09.6) and is
the co-owner of the outdoor 200-meters F
record (20.8). He also was a member of three r
school record relay teams. 1
"Verlon possesses a lot of innate speed,
but he is a dedicated hardworker in practice, li
too." Strong said. "He has a unique way in f
which he prepares himself for races. This ri
shows that he is a smart competitor." a
Rhodes said senior Rickv Griddine has
helped him in his track career at Carolina. S
"HE KNEW a lot more about track than I 4
did," he said. "He was willing to work with
me and teach me some of the things he knew s
about track." 4
Rhodes qualified in the 500-meters for the c
National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor
Track and Field Championships held
this past year in Syracuse.
