Gamecocks 73-72 Monday night before 701
specators. It was the first time the Patriots
had beaten USC since 1977.
"Beating South Carolina is one of the biggest
wins for us in the year," Lady Patriot
head coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "They
(Francis Marion) didn't just lay down and
die; they wanted it."
USC HAI) an opportunity to tie the score

Doretha Garland sank one of two free
throws to make the score 72-70.
With 17 seconds remaining USC guard
Marsi McAlister tried to pass inside to
Brantley Southers, but the ball was deflected
and recoverd by FMC. Jeannette Alston was
fouled and hit the winning free throw, and
USC's Mindy Ballou scored the last two
points of the game at the buzzer.
USC head coach Terry Kelly said he didn't
think his team forced the pass to Southers.
"The pass just didn't get there," he said.
"I don't think they were trying too hard.
"I THINK this game reminds us of how
tough it is to play away from home."
The Lady Patriots, 21-4, outshot USC by
19 percent in the first half and led by as many
as 10 points before Carolina cut the lead to
34-26 at halftime.

The Lady Gamecocks played a majority of
the game without sophomore center Sharon

The Lady Gamecocks, 14-9, lost to
Louisville in the final seconds on Feb. 4,

the game one of the worst performance of
the year.
"It will be a very tough ballgame," Kelly
said. "They have very good guards."

USC's men's and women's swim teams

Athletic Conference swimming and diving
championships today through Saturday in
Carolina Natatorium.
The meets will begin with preliminary
heats at 10 a.m. today, and finals at 6:30

Greg Conde said.
"We're optimistic about this meet," he
said. "If our kids swim as well as they're
capable of doing, these next four days will
come off well for us."
Conde said (JSC's toughest conference
competition will come from Florida State
University, while Tulane and Cincinnati may
also be difficult.
"Our main competition will come from
Florida State, who we beat earlier in the
season," he said. "They have some good
swimmers, so our kids will have to be up to ,

"Our other competition will be from
Tulane and Cincinnati, who also have several
tough competitors."
The coach said having the championship
meet at home was an advantage for the
Carolina swimmers.
"It's definitely a big advantage," he said.

having the event on campus.
"There is one slight drawback, because the
swimmers have the pressure of attending
classes," he said. "They sometimes have to
go to class during the day in between the
times that they race."
Conde said participating in a conference
meet for the first time should help more
uamecock swimmers reach the National Collegiate
Athletic Association Championships
at Cleveland, Ohio, in March.
"I think it gives our swimmers more to
shoot for," he said. "The Metro is more formal
than the independent meets we used to
participate in. The conference is well
organized, with more guidelines and goals to
aim for."
A good turnout is expected for the fourday
event, Conde said, with tickets sold by
the USC Ticket Office. Tickets cost $2 for
the public, and are free for USC students
with a validated identification.
Volunteer timers are still needed for the 10
a.m. and 6:30 p.m. heats, Conde said. Interested
students should contact the USC
swimming office at 777-3829.
