digest Evangelist denies charge COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Evangelist Leroy Jenkins denies he is a homosexual and says he is so popular with women he has hired three bodyguards to keep them away. Jenkins, of Delaware, Ohio, and Columbia, S.C., made his comment in reaction to a $10 million lawsuit filed by Thomas E. "Tia" Howard in Richland County Common Pleas Court. Howard, 25, said in the suit that Jenkins, 46, proposed marriage in 1980 when both men were prisoners at the Walden Correctional Institute in Columbia. Howard also contended that Jenkins reneged on a pro mise to finance a sex-change operation for Howard because the evangelist wanted to keep him as his homosexual lover. At the time, Jenkins was serving time for conspiracy to commit arson and assault. He has been free on an extended work release program since December 1982. Howard remains in prison for armed robbery. Jenkins said in a telephone interview that he is dating a "very lovely lady" who lives in Columbus, adding that they have discussed marriage. Jenkins has been married twice before and said he has eight children. Police release senator's son COLUMBIA (AP) ? The 21-year-old son of state Sen. Metts said the two knew each other before the night of the alleged incident. Following an investigation by sheriff's officers, the woman was taken before Lexington County Magistrate J.W.
