t Greatest Athlete
By Tracy Mixson
After winning (he gold medal in the Olympic decathlon
eight years ago, Bruce Jenner's 11th event ? life after training
? has remained busy.
Dubbed the "World's Greatest Athlete" in 1976, Jenner
became an American sports hero and household name following
his world and Olympic record-setting performance in
which he scored 8,618 points.
The gold medalist came to Columbia for two days this past
week to renresent Blue Cross/Blue Shield of South Carolina.
and to promote the organization's eighth annual Carolina
Marathon.
WHILE HERE, he participated in a whirlwind of events,
making personal appearances throughout the city. He gave a
talk to students, faculty and guests, led a runner's symposium,
fired the starting gun to begin the marathon and ran in the
race's five-kilometer Fun Run.
Addressing USC students in the Russell House Ballroom,
Jenner spoke about his Olympic performances in 1972 and
1976. He talked of goals and making the commitment to win
the cold medal, and how students could aoolv this process to
their own lives to achieve success.
Structuring his life much like the eventful decathalon, he
said he had been able to maintain his superstar status better
than previous Olympic heros because of his continuing involvement
in numerous activities.
HE RECENTLY signed an exclusive contract with NBC-TV
Sports, and continues to support organizations like Special
Olympics. He and his wife, Linda, are co-chairmen for the
American Diabetes Association, and help in two major fundraisers
for Multiple Sclerosis.
In addition to being a father and a former Olympic champion,
Jenner finds time to be an actor, author, charity and
advertisement spokesman, TV announcer and producer.
It's been eight years since his gold medal performance, and
in that time he said his priorities have changed.
He said his goals today are to be a good father to his four
children, and continue a successful business career in
television. ?... .. <0
