By Margarita Pats
The book is almost invariably better than the movie, and the
original is usually better than the remake. So why do remakes
keep popping up? Wouldn't it be easier and kinder to rerelease
the originals?
"Unfaithfully Yours" is a remake of Preston Sturges'
original of the same name. Neither movie will go down in the
annals of comedy genius.
The story line revolves around a jealous husband who is
sure his much younger wife is having an affair.
Dudley Moore is engaging and funny as Claude Eastman,
the celebrated conductor, whose wife (Nastassja Kinski) is
supposedly having an affair with Armand Assante, another
musician.
The movie starts innocently enough when Eastman leaves
instructions with his Italian major domo to tell his agent
(Albert Brooks) to keep an eye on his wife while he's away.
The message is lost in the translation and a private eye is hired
instead.
Eastman is then confronted by a report stating a man was
seen leaving his wife's apartment at 1:30 in the morning. The

lascivous exit was documented on video tape by the apartm<
building's security system.
In his confused state, Eastman bungles around bef<
deciding to kill his wife and her supposed lover.
Moore is too comcdic to be a murderer. He's much m<
convincing preparing for the act. A scene at a police stati
where Eastman turns on his agent (Brooks) is reminiscent
good slap stick humor.
The scene that put him in jail is also funny and enjoyab
But perhaps Moore's greatest moments are while he is un<
the influence of a coke-tranquilizer cocktail.
Brooks is one of those well-known unknowns. He's ibeen
dozens of films, always as the second or third or foui
banana. In "Unfaithfully Yours," he's responsible for m<
of the funniest lines in the film.
Assante is familiar as the "other man." He exudes threat!
ing sexuality.
Kinski.asthe attractive younger wife, is refreshing. Her
fections for her older husband are tender and genuine.
"Unfaithfully Yours" has lapses in the pace interming
with spots of genuinely funny scenes. Those lapses prevent t
movie from being as entertaining as it could have been.
