Although assistant basketball
coach Dave Blank is not a native
South Carolinian, he said it
doesn't take long to get caught up
in the USC-Clemson rivalry.
"It didn't take long for me to
understand why the rivalry between
the two teams is so intense,"
he said. "You can put away the
statistics in this game. Almost
anything can happen when we get
together."
The 8 p.m. game Saturday between
the 11-9 Tigers and the 10-9
Gamecocks in Carolina Coliseum
will be a rematch. The two teams

"IT'S A big game because

"And because this counts as a

game, we need a win to stay close
going into the tournament. This is
a two-fold situation."

Summitt also said competition for the forward positions
will be the toughest.
"WE HAVE the most talented forwards in the world," she
said. "It will be one of the toughest positions to win."
Summitt said the committee will invite 27 players for the
rials, which will take place April 20-27 in Colorado Springs,
Colo.
Players who competed in the oast vear's Nnrimml Snnrn.
Festival will also receive invitations, bringing the total number
of players invited to around 160.
"The team may not consist of the 12 best players in the
country," she said. "1 want the players to fit in a system, to
fill a role."
SUMMITT ALSO said she doesn't think her players at Tennessee
have any advantage over other players because they're
going through her system.
"Fortunately, I've been at Tennessee since 1977, and a lot
of players around the country know my style," she said.
"We'll have to have good team defense and offense," Summitt
said. "Any player who can't play defense will simply not
play."
Summitt was named Olympic head coach July 31, 1982, at
i the National Sports Festival. She was co-captain of the 1976
' Olympic team that won a silver medal.
SUMMITT SA1I) the most difficult aspect of coaching an
international team is taking a group of starters and molding
j them into a team.

start, but five would," Summitt said.
"I think all of them were a little shocked when they realized
it because all of them had been starting."
The team went on to win the gold medal at the World
University Games. Since being named Olympic coach, Summitt's
teams have also taken a gold medal at the Pan American
Games and a silver at last year's world championship.
"I'M OPTIMISTIC as far as what we can do," Summitt
said. "The Russians have a 7-2 center. They're systematized
and very structured, and it will be hard to take them away
from that in a game."
Summitt said the U.S. team would be rated just behind the
Soviets, with China, Hungary and Cuba also in contention for
the gold.
