USC sophomore forward Brantley
^ Southers turned in a perfect shooting perforfc"
mance as the women's basketball team narrowly
upset I2th-ranked Auburn University
65-64 Monday in Carolina Coliseum.
Carolina used the Lady Tiger's tactics,
beating the top ranked defensive team at
their own game by forcing 21 turnovers.
Southers shot a perfect game, hitting 10 of
10 shots from the floor and two free throws
for 22 points and a new school record.
Southers' shooting set a record for highest
field goal percentage in one game, formerly
held by sophomore center Sharon Gilmore.
Gilmore hit 14 of 15 shots in the past season
against Marshall University.
"By far it was our finest effort of the
year," USC head coach Terry Kelly said. "I
think we played a super game. We beat the
No. 1 defensive team in the nation with
defense.

"It was also our best team effort," he
said. "Brantley Southers had a phenomenal
performance and led us to the win."
The coach said he was concerned the
players may take tonight's game against
Georgia Southern too lightly after Carolina's
win over Auburn.
"The whole coaching staff is interested in
seeing how the team comes off this win," he
said. "We're concerned they may be overconfident
and concentrating more on (Metro
opponent) Louisville Saturday.
"But Georgia Southern is looking for an
upset."
The Eagles are led by 6-0 center Trina
Roberts, who averages 18.2 points per game. ti
The senior from Charleston is hitting 62 per- |

Georgia Southern carries a 9-10 record in- ?
to the game. GSU and USC have met i
previously six times, with the Eagles leading p
the series 5-1.
USC fell behind early Monday night, trailing
by as much as six points in the first half.
But the Lady Gamecocks pulled even with
penetration at the baseline from Gilmore and
outside shooting from Southers to lead 36-30
at the half.
In the second half, Carolina continued its
success on the inside, but the Lady Tigers
then took control, evening the score 44-44
and later pulling ahead 60-49. ?j
But Southers continued her shooting attack
and USC staged a rally in the final 1
minutes and held onto a one-point lead to j,
win the game 65-64. 7
The loss was Auburn's fourth one-point *
decision this season, dropping their record to j|
14-5. USC improved its record to 9-5.
Southers was the game's high scorer with |
22 points, while Gilmore and junior forward
Marsi McAlister added 19 and 10 points,
