Carowinds' ai
By Robert O'Connor
Singers, dancers and instrumentalists
crowded the Russell House Ballroom for
auditions in hope of attaining summer
employment at a popular amusement park.

opportunities are open at other Taft Attractions
as well, including Kings Island in Ohio
and Canada's Wonderland.
Those who attended the auditions were
judged mainly on talent, although appearance
and attitude were counted heavily
in the judging, Miller said.
Choreographer Carol Norris, musical
directer Paul Ward and Miller did the judging
for Carowinds. Heavy experience was not
necessary for the audition, Miller said.
"Most people in college have the required
,L skills. We look for talent, poise, enthusiasm
and a good, positive attitude," he said.
The Carowinds audition does not follow
the traditional theatrical routine, Miller said.
"We spend as much time as possible preparing

The second audition is scheduled for j
Feb. 5 at Carowinds. Technical positions, in- ]
eluding costumers and Hanna Barbera and
Smurf characters, can be applied for on the
same day.
Hired entertainment performers usually
make between $180 and $261 a week depending
on the particular job assigned, but
transportation and housing are not provided
by the park.

The Columbia auditions were the second
stop on a week-long, six-city search for talent
through South and North Carolina.
Carl Amoth, a two-year employee of
Carowinds and a former USC student, found
his experience to be rewarding. "Carowinds
was a good way to build up my talents as well
as make lasting friendships," Amoth said.
