From Staff Reports
The Towers will have a new television
viewing room within two weeks, the Towers
government president Timothy Thomas said
Friday.
The room will be in the main lobby of the
Towers where the television set was located.
"We've always wanted to seal that area off
so that the residents could watch TV without
bothering others," Thomas said.
The new room will cost about $900 to con

The university is doing the construction
for the room, designed by Residential Life
Services and the Towers government,
Thomas said.
Plans first began for the room early in
September 1983, and construction had been
set for the Christmas break.

thousands of college freshmen waste millions
of dollars and expose the students to needless
radiation because they rarely detect major
disease, a study says.
When tuberculosis was common, regular
chest X-rays were useful, but now the procedure
seldom reveals more than a thorough
physical examination does, according to the
authors of the University of Pennsylvania
study.

"We were all set to begin (during the
break), but the university police wouldn't let
the construction people into the building,"
Thomas said.
The walls were put up last week, and the
large screen television the Towers purchased
last year was expected to be installed in time
for the Super Bowl Sunday afternoon.

the lobby of the Russell House will be built
soon, and a folding door will be on the room
by the end of this week.
Whether the large screen television will
become a permanant fixture in the room is
still unknown, Thomas said.
"If we leave the large screen TV in the
room it will definitely be bolted down.
We've also planned the room out so that the
i desk assistants can keep an eye on the television,"
he said.

The researchers estimated that less than
one case each of leukemia, breast cancer,
lung cancer and cancer of the thyroid would
be developed among the 700,000 incoming
college freshmen who received such required
or recommended chest X-rays in 1979. But
such tests do increase the aggregate amount
of radiation people are exposed to, an
amount that should be kept as low as possible,
Kitz said Thursday.
