Police arrest I
By John Dainer
A man police believed to be mentally
disturbed was arrested and charged Tuesday
in connection with the burning of a USCowned
trailer.
The man, a 25-year-old Sylvania, Ga.
native, was arrested shortly after the 4:30
a.m. blaze began behind the University
Engineering Model Shop at Greene and
Gadsden streets.
No one was injured in the blaze discovered

trailer was a total loss.
POLICE SAY the suspect was seen across
the street from the trailer near the personnel
office after a witness told police that the man
smelled like smoke.
Two officers approached him and asked
him where he spent the night.
The man said he had slept in the trailer and
had started the fire that gutted the building,
according to police reports.
Police believed the man only spent one
night in the trailer and that he started the fire
to keep warm.
THE TRAILER'S value and exact ownership
remains a mystery.
A man who works at the model shop said
the trailer had been there for more than a
year after "just appearing one day."
He said no one has claimed it, and no one
has used the trailer since it arrived.

DR. FONTELLE Thompson of the
Biology Department said his department had
used the trailer several years ago, but then someone
moved it behind the model shop.
"It had been moved without notification
with many instruments inside. Vandals broke
in and destroyed many of them, so the
biology department cleared it out," Thompson
said.
He said he does not know who is responsible
for the trailer now, but believes the
ownership was transferred after his department
finished using it.
The trailer was moved because it was in the
way of the Williams-Brice Stadium expansion,
said Project Development Director
James Bass.
BASS SAID Thompson was using it in the
corner of the stadium parking lot, and it was
empty when it was taken away.
The trailer had been vandalized before it
was taken away, he said.
He said he doesn't know who owned the
trailer and believes it was up for grabs before
u ournea.
The trailer was a popular spot for
vagrants, and the university has not used the
trailer in a long time, Lawrence Beauford of
Environmental Service said.
ALTHOUGH HE has heard speculations
about who owns the trailer, he said he could
not substantiate anything.
The university will have to absorb the cost
of the trailer since insurance deductibles are
already high enough, Beaufort said.
