By Bob Lang
The Lady Gamecocks will host the Lady
Panthers of Pittsburgh University tomorrow
night at Carolina Coliseum.
The 9-6 Panthers are led by junior forward
I Jennifer Bruce. She averages 20.6 points per
game this season, and National Collegiate
Athletic Association currently ranks her 13th
in the country in scoring.
Bruce was named Big East conference
rookie of the week three times this past year.
She was also named an honorable mention
All-America this past season by Fast Break
magazine.
ALSO LEADING the Panthers is Julie
Callan, who has been named Big East Rookie
of the Week twice this season.
Coached by Judy Saurer, the Lady Pani
thers have four returning from this past
year's 17-11 team.
In the past week, Pitt upset Big East
preseason favorite Villanova 71-68 in
overtime.
Pitt has made 45 percent of its field goals
and 65 percent of its free throws this season.
THE LADY Panthers will play South
Carolina State tonight before torn row's 5
p.m. game against USC.
A 16-unanswered-point surge by the Lady
Gamecocks was not enough to defeat the

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Viewers of
A'lantic Coast Conference basketball yelled
foul when Season Ticket came into their
lives, and now the package of additional
coverage is out of the game.
I Disqualification came Tuesday afternoon,
when officials of the ACC, RaycomJefferson
Productions and the Entertainemei\t
and Sports Programming Network announced
they could no longer endure the torrent
of protests.
The end took effect with Tuesday night's
Duke-Wake Forest basketball game. As for
the remainder of the schedule, a spokesman
for ESPN said the network might pick up
two or three of the games, but would not
carry the rest of the package.
"RECENT COURT decisions have made
it impossible to continue the package this
season," Raycom president Rick Ray said.
Under the terms of Season Ticket, cable
television subscribers were to pay for the
privilege of seeing 21 ACC basketball games
in addition to the 38-game package offered
on commercial television. Those who did not
[subscribe lost their ESPN signal and were
told to tune to another channel, where alternate
programming was provided.
What followed was a fast break to the
courtrooms of North Carolina. Attorneys
sought and received temporary restraining
orders lifting the Season Ticket blackout and
forcing local cable system operators to show
those games originally scheduled as part of
the naekaee.
The final straw may have come last Thursday,
when a host of legal maneuvers forced
cable systems to lift the blackout on the
North Carolina-Maryland game. About 13
if? systems were hit with the orders.,

THE BEARCATS came right back and
pulled ahead 39-37 at the half.
Cincinnati never trailed in the second half,

"We hope fans recognize that this was an opportunity
to view games that would not
otherwise be available."
ESPN president Bill Grimes decided to end
the idea instead of allowing cable operators
to suffer what he called "continued undue
hardship and expense resulting from the local
legal proceedings."
Grimes added ESPN will continue to fight
in state and federal courts for the right to

N.C. Attorney General Rufus Edmisten,
who said he would attempt to get the games
shown to all cable subscribers, was not pleased
with the decision.
"I HAD hoped that the decision would go
the other way, and that the producers and
broadcasters would allow all ESPN cable

said in a prepared statement. "In my
opinion, the promoters had no right to

In the meantime, those who subscribed to
Season Ticket have been advised to contact
their local cable operators to try and secure
their refunds for the games not provided.
