Marshall break

By Tracy Mixson
USC's women's basketball team had trouble
itopping Marshall University's break yesterday, \
ailing to the Thundering Herd 89-80 in Hun- \
injjton, W. Va.
"Marshall's quickness hurt us a lot," USC
?ach Terry Kelly said. "They beat us down the 1
loor too many times."
Forward Karen Pelphrey led Marshall past the I
^ady Gamecocks, scoring 44 points to lead all
icorers. Pelphrey hit 17 of 28 shots from the
loor, and 10 of 13 free throws. Her 44 points |
vere only two shy of Marshall's school record.
THE THUNDERING Herd led by as many as 1
12 points in the first half, before Carolina rallied

Following a 35-35 halftime deadlock, Marshall

Foul trouble was a major problem for USC, as
ihe Lady Gamecocks committed 30 infractions to j
Marshall's 10.

Carolina with 22 points, but fouled out with 1:30 i

were also benched after five fouls.
USC'S WINTER break was to blame for the
jquad's problems, Kelly said.
"The layoff during the holidays accounted for
jorne of our problems. We just didn't have a good t
iffort defensively or offensively."
The Lady Gamecocks dropped to 4-4.
After a disappointing 77-69 loss to Kentucky
[)ec. 10, the Lady Gamecocks blew out. Western
Carolina 84-59 Dec. 17 and downed the Indiana
Soosiers Dec. 29, 83-76.
"i tnmK we played pretty good against
Western Caroling and Indiana," USC coach
Perry Kelly said. "We didn't play well at all in
he Kentucky game, and they simply outplayed
is. I didn't feel v/e had as much intensity in that
fame as we did in the next two."
The coach said free throw shooting was the key

"We showed good intensity against Western
Carolina and Indiana," he said. "We still have a
ong way to go, but during those games I think
ve began to jell offensively, and our defense also
nade a difference."
