Ernest Hollings, D-S.C., has defended his stance against tuition tax credits, saying he is not against private schools and colleges. The Democratic presidential hopeful's comments came after a newspaper published by the Charleston Roman Catholic diocese sharply criticized Hollings' role in the defeat of the tuition tax credit bill. Hollings said the article in The Catholic Banner, which called the presidential candidate "almost fanatical" in his opposition to the bill, is an emotional attack not based on reason. "What I am opposed to is the use of public funds to support private schools," Hollings added. "The Dancing in the rain Charles Adams, undeclared sophomore, \ dorm yesterday afternoon. It's a fairly new trend, but more adults are now having orthodontic treatment than ever." Nationally, about 20 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults and the percentage is growing. Why, all of a sudden, are adults opting for the "tinsel mouth look" that was formerly the bailiwick of the high school set? The reasons are almost as varied as the number of adults having teeth problems. First, grown people are becoming aware that they ? like their teen-age sons and daughters ? can be helped by orthodontic treatment. I. M M 1 M f % % Tt Ai i,rv. (TV. And since more adults are having crooked teeth straightened and malocclusions (improper bites) corrected, the embarrassment that went right along with the wires is disappearing. "The biggest difference between adults and youngsters having orthodontic treatment is the stigma of hin/ino Krcippc in vnnr mnnth " caiH Daughtry. "Whereas kids just accepted braces as part of growing up, adults were more sensitive. "But the more who did it, the more popular it became ? to the point that newspapers, magazines and television picked up on it ? and adults became aware that they could have orthodontic treatment as easily, in some cases more easily, than children could." In a 1977 study done by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, some 89 percent of the children between 12 and 17 showed orthodontic problems. Consider the number of adults aging right alongside them that grew up before orthodontics became widely used. "Malocclusions can lead to an early loss of teeth," said Dr. J.J. Richardson.
