Missed frc
By Tracy Mixson
CLEMSON ? With USC's men's basketball
season only three games old the team has
shot 56 percent from the free throw line.
Bad free throw shooting haunted the
Gamecocks Saturday night in a 72-71 loss to
Clemson University at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The two Dreviouslv undefeated schools
played down to the wire after (JSC mounted
a seven-point comeback in the second half.
IN THE final seconds, USC forward /
guard Harold Martin missed an opportunity
to tie the game and possibly send it into overtime
when he was fouled by Clemson forward
David Shaffer. As the Gamecocks trailed
70-68, Martin went to the line on a oneand-one
situation and connected on his first
shot, but missed the second.
Carolina was then forced to foul Tiger
guard Marc Campbell, who made both foul
shots to put the game away.
Hoping for a foul, Carolina tried one final
desperation shot as forward Jimmy Foster
broke inside and scored on a layup. But no
foul was called, and the Tigers won 72-71.
"I don't feel very good at all right now,"
USC head basketball coach Bill Foster said
following the game. "We played hard, but
we didn't get the performance we needed
from our players,"
"OVERALL, I thought (Jimmy) Foster's
game was good," he said. The 6-8 forward
was mc game s nign scorer wun zu points,
hitting nine of 15 from the field with two free
throws and getting 15 rebounds.
Forward Brad Jergenson and center Mike
Brittain also scored in double figures with 14
and 10 points respectively, while guard Jimmy
Hawthorne came off the bench to add
eight more.
Clemsonhada balance scoring attack with
6-6 center Murray Jarman and guard Vincent
Hamilton, who came off of a wrist injury
sustained last season, contributed 16 points
apiece, forward Anthony Jenkens added 14.
and forward Raymond Jones scored 10.

allowed the Gamecocks to stage a comeback
in the final two minutes, and led up to Martin's
missed free throw.
"It was a great win for us," said Clemson's
head coach, also named Bill Foster.
"I'd hate to come out on the short end when
we played a tough ballgame like that."
The coach said he was concerned when
Carolina led at halftime.
"WE KNEW that during the second half
we couldn't afford to give them so many
baskets in transition," he said. "We were
pretty much shut out inside during the first
half, and it looked like Carolina was having a
field day out there."
"Overall it was a good team win, and I
think we played really well. It was a tough
game, and South Carolina looked excellent. I

Carolina's coach Foster wasn't as enthusiastic
about the caliber of play during the
game.
"(Clemson) defended well, but we made
too many mistakes ourselves," he said. "We
played a good emotional game and were able
to create a lot of mistakes, but unfortunately
too many of them were our own.
I UKiNUV LKS REALLY hurt us, and
luring that crucial time near the end we missed
some key shots."
Saturday's loss spoiled the 600th game in
:he collegiate coaching career of USC's
Foster, and his 90th as a Gamecock. Despite
defeat, the coach said the loss should not be
difficult for Carolina to overcome since it's
still early in the season.
The Gamecocks, now 2-1, will try to
avenge last year's 80-75 loss to East Tennessee
State Saturday night when USC meets
