USC has about 50 endowed chairs sponsored
by private support, according to Chris
Vlahoplus, senior administrative vice
president.
These professorial chairs, funded by the
public, make recruitment of prominent
faculty members to specific areas possible.
"An endowment is a source of money that

money are used to support some activity. Endowment
is not spent. It always stays in tact,
and the money it earns is used. An endowment
by law cannot be invaded," Vlahoplus
said.
"The earnings are used to supplement the
salary of a distinguished professor. The
minimum endowment wc try to achieve is
$100,000. The largest endowment wc have
pledged to us is $500,000. The money is then
used to attract and retain outstanding professors,"
he said.

chairs are used throughout the country in
higher education. Recently created chairs in
elude a $250,000 chair in bio-chemistry and
computer science, and a $100,000 endowment
in the fine arts. A $500,000 chair in
economic theory has also been created.
"All of these chairs are created with
private money. We have a number of chairs
on the $100,000 level. That is where we
begin. A group of private citizens help the
university raise money. The Chair Endowment
Club is a part of the USC Educational
Foundation," Vlahoplus said.
Endowed chairs are named by the donors,
and they become members of the Chair En
dowment Club. Selection lor endowed chairs
is based on scholarly achievement and
distinction. Teaching ability, character, industry,
dedication, promise, research,
creative writing and the university's interests
are also taken into consideration.
"We are always trying to get more chairs.

APPOINTMENTS FOR endowed chairs
are reviewed by the provost of the university.
The term for endowed chairs is five years.
After that time, the positions are reviewed
and reappointed.
All endowed chairs arc acquired through
the executive director of the university's
Educational Foundation and the Chair Endowment
Club of the foundation. The provost
then reviews the applicants and makes
recommendations to the president. Final
decisions are made by the president, after
consultations witn tne executive Committee
of the Chair Endowment Club.
Traditionally, seven endowed chairs are
not members of the Chair Endowment Club.
These chairs include two business administration
positions, one engineering

"Raising of private money to support
chairs and scholarships is important. Overwhelmingly,
the money we raise goes into
these things. A university is measured b>
good students and faculty. You help attract
these by funds," Vlahoplus said.
THE LARGEST number of endowed
chairs are in the business administration and
law schools. The chairs are used as supplements
to a professor in addition to his
salary.
"The greatest benefit is that we are able to
attract distinguished faculty and retain them.
You have to pay adequately, md there is constant
competition for good I acuity, not only
from institutions hut also from business. In
order to attract faculty, we need these supplements,
these endowed chairs," he said.
