Fewer students should be admitted to the USC school of
Medicine as a way to cut costs and maintain quality of the student
body, the state Joint Board of Health and Medical
Education told the USC board of trustees' Medical Affairs
Committee Friday.
Committee chairman Lewis Wright said the school must
have a certain number of students for efficiency and costeffectiveness.
Also, a minimun number of students is
necessary to maintain quality and accredidation.
There would be benefits to a modest expansion of class size,
Wright said. "There are more clinical resources here than are
students in Columbia."
At the Richland County clinic, two students handle about
40 patients, he said. The medical school should "add a few

Newly-named School of Medicine Dean J. O' Neal Humphries
suggested theschoolnot cut back on enrollment because
the number of students applying would then shrink.
"We must keep enrollment stable," he said.
The committee will discuss the action further before action
is taken.
Also discussed was the consortium program with area
hospitals. All members agreed the consortium is effective, and
that the residency program is good for providing students with
practical experience.
Access to medical services in rural areas was discussed.
Some committee members said reasons for lack of doctors in
rural areas is that doctors in those areas are paid less than

Missiles Continued from page 1
Various peace groups have protested vigorously against the
missiles. But while these groups have had some impact on public
opinion, they have not influenced governments yet, Marshall
said.
Eventually, the peace movements may become strong enough
