Season ends in black
for local merchants,
if not for Gamecocks
By Brian McCreight
The Gamecocks may have ended the season in the red,
but their fans' spirit has definitely put Columbia area
clothiers in the black.
A spontaneous drive of school spirit during the week
prior to the annual Clemson-Carolina classic had students
buying black sweaters, shirts and caps anywhere they could
be found.
The sartorial spirit was in honor of head coach Joe Morrison,
who always wears black to a game, and a
psychological tactic to counter the glaring orange of Clemson
fans. Also a rumor had been circulating that the
Gamecocks would be wearing new black uniforms for the
game. Saturday the rumor was confirmed.
Mike Sawyer, a school uniform salesman for T & T
Sports, who supplies USC's team uniforms, would not
comment on the rumor before the game, but he did say
sales of black clothing had gone up more than 200 percent.
"We had two dozen black shirts gone in three days and
had to reorder jackets, sweatshirts and polo shirts,"
Sawyer said. "Tuesday's order came in Wednesday and
sold out."
At the USC Bookstore in the Russell House, business
was good for everything according to I>mna Shcaly, a
clothing department salesclerk.
"I've worked here for three years, and this is the most
spirit I've ever seen," she said.
Other area stores, such as South Carolina Bookstore,
Tops and Bottoms, Howard's Sports Store and Todd &
Moore said sales were "great" or "fantastic." Most

ordered new stock from as far away as Charlotte, N.C.
J.B. White's, Tapp's, Davison's, Belk, Riohway and K
Mart all had increased sales in black clothing and
Gamecock paraphernalia.
"We have an excellent school started. It will be a challenge
to keep this school's standard."
Prior to coming to South Carolina, Humphries was a professor
of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
and associate director for clinical cardiology at the Johns
Hopkins Hospital.
